Read the back.

Jesus is my (boy) friend. The front reads JESUS IS MY BOY FRIEND, and one red pen line goes through BOY. Under it, in small caps: I HAVE CALLED YOU FRIENDS, John 15:15. It plays on the boyfriend joke and lands on what Scripture actually says. On the back, small and high, John 15:13 and the †CLUB mark.

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13, World English Bible

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.”
John 15:15, World English Bible

The lie it answers. The joke is that Jesus is your boyfriend: warm, close, always available. The Bible's word for it is better and costs more. In John 15 Jesus tells the people at the table they are not servants but friends, and in the same breath says what a friend does: lays down his life. He isn't a crush. He's the one who stayed.

The context. John 15 is Jesus talking with his disciples on the night before the cross. Verse 13 is the line the whole evening turns on, and verse 15 explains why he can say it: “No longer do I call you servants” … “But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.” A servant is told what to do. A friend is told what the Father is doing.
