Every comment section has a thread like this one: thousands of likes on the cruelest reply, and the pull to answer in kind, only louder. The back of this tee is that thread with every hostile word redacted. You can’t read what was said, and you don’t need to. The one legible reply is from @influencedfirst, and it is Romans 12:17-21, word for word, with overcome evil with good circled in red. The chest is the same reply in a small speech bubble.
Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.” Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:17-21, World English Bible
The context. Paul wrote this to believers in Rome who would face real hostility, some of it violent. He doesn’t pretend evil isn’t evil, and he doesn’t say wrongs don’t matter: he says vengeance belongs to God, which frees us from having to carry it. Then he gets practical. Live at peace as far as it depends on you. If your enemy is hungry, feed him. Readers take the coals of fire line in more than one way, but the instruction around it is plain. The last line is the whole strategy: you are not beaten when you are wronged. You are beaten when you become what wronged you.
- A small @influencedfirst speech bubble on the chest; the redacted comment thread and Romans 12:17-21 on the back
