Details and care

Look under the yoke.

A quiet one. The circle Members crest (CIC · Est. A.D. 28) on the chest, and across the back, just under the yoke seam, one small line: LEVITICUS 19:34. Anyone who looks it up finds the verse behind the whole Stranger set: love the foreigner as yourself, because you were foreigners once.

“If a stranger lives as a foreigner with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. The stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native-born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you lived as foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.”
Leviticus 19:33-34, World English Bible

The context. Leviticus 19 is the chapter that says to love your neighbor as yourself. Fifteen verses later God widens the circle on purpose: the foreigner living among you is to be treated as the native-born and loved the same way. The reason given is memory. Israel had been the outsider in Egypt, and God expected that to make them kind. Centuries later, Matthew tells of Joseph taking Mary and the child Jesus by night into Egypt, out of reach of a king who wanted the boy dead. For a season the Son of God's family were the strangers in someone else's land, and Egypt took them in. That is the engraving on the back. The companion to AMEND: not a policy, a command with a memory attached.
