Details and care

Rest is a gift.

A †CLUB mark with PSALM 127:2 beneath it, small, on the left leg. The rest of the verse is on the matching crew: for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.”
Psalm 127:2, World English Bible

The lie it answers. Hustle culture says rest is for people who don't want it badly enough: rise early, stay late, and your worth is whatever you produced today. Psalm 127 doesn't tell you to stop working. It tells you who is actually holding the house up. Sleep isn't a reward you earn by finishing. It's a gift, given to people who are already loved.

The context. Psalm 127 is a Song of Ascents, sung by pilgrims on the road up to Jerusalem, and its title gives it to Solomon. Verse 1 sets it up: unless Yahweh builds the house, the builders labor in vain; unless Yahweh watches the city, the watchman stays awake for nothing. The builders still build and the watchman still watches. The point is who carries the weight. Verse 2 turns the anxious all-nighter into the picture of a person who forgot that. The World English Bible prints God's name, Yahweh, where many Bibles print “the LORD.”
