The context. Proverbs 15 sets answers side by side: the one that turns anger away and the one that stirs it up. The comment on the shirt is made up, with no real handle or platform, because the point isn’t who said it. The point is what you do next. A gentle answer doesn’t mean having no answer. It means the next thing you say doesn’t add fuel.
