Most of us were taught some version of the same deal: get yourself together, then you will be worth loving. Work on it, earn it, keep earning it. Romans 5:8 says the opposite in one small word. Across the front, the verse reads straight through a huge italic yet, circled in red pen: while we were yet sinners. Before the cleanup. Before the improvement.
But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8, World English Bible
The context. Paul has spent four chapters showing that no one is made right with God by their own record. Here he says how God proved his love: not by waiting for us to become good, but by dying for us while we were still weak, ungodly, even his enemies (Romans 5:6-10). Love that waits for you to deserve it is a wage. This is a gift, given first. Grace does change people. It just never waits for the change before it shows up.
