Details and care

A marked-up Bible page on the back: Ephesians 4:32 with “be kind” circled, “tender hearted” and “forgiving each other” underlined in red pen, and a margin note pointing to Colossians 3:12. The circle crest on the left chest.
“And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32, World English Bible
The lie it answers: “Kindness is optional, and forgiveness is for people who apologise first.”
The context. Paul wrote this at the end of a stretch of instructions about how believers talk to each other (Ephesians 4:25-32), and the verse before it lists what to put away: bitterness, wrath, anger, slander. The measure for forgiveness is not how much they deserve. It’s “just as God also in Christ forgave you.” The margin note points to Colossians 3:12, where kindness is on the list of what to put on. (The WEB spells it “tender hearted”, as two words.)
