Everyone knows 3:16. It is on signs at ballgames. Fewer people know the very next sentence, and it answers something a lot of people assume: that God, and the people who follow him, are mostly out to pass judgment. The front is a small 3:16 with a pen arrow. The back sets 3:16 small, as the context, then 3:17 huge. Judge is circled, not crossed out. Saved through him is underlined in red.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
John 3:16-17, World English Bible
The context. Jesus is talking at night with Nicodemus, a respected religious teacher, about being born again. Verse 16 says why God sent his Son: love. Verse 17 says what he came to do, and what he did not come to do. The chapter is honest that judgment is real; the next verses speak about it plainly. But the purpose of his coming was rescue, not a verdict. Anyone who wears his name should be known for the same thing. If the people around us only ever hear the judgment from us, we have skipped a verse.
