Read the back.

Seventy tally marks scratched across the back, fourteen groups of five, with the last one circled in red. That is how long the exiles waited. Under the count sit SEVENTY YEARS and Jeremiah 29:10-11, with hope underlined and a future double-underlined in red. Jeremiah 29:11 is everyone's favorite promise; the seventy years are the part that usually gets cropped out. The back carries verses 10 and 11; here they are with the two verses after them.

For Yahweh says, “After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek me, and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:10-13, World English Bible

The context. Jeremiah 29 is a letter to Jewish exiles in Babylon. Just before this, God tells them to build houses, plant gardens and pray for the city that carried them off, because they will be there seventy years. Many who first heard verse 11 would not live to see the trip home. The promise was still true. God had not forgotten them, and the future he meant was bigger than one lifetime: a people brought back who would seek him and find him. It is a promise you can stand on too. It is just slower and deeper than a good-year verse. The World English Bible prints God's name, Yahweh, where many Bibles print “the LORD.”
